Sparkle Hearts

What’s the easiest and simplest way to jazz up a cookie?  Sanding sugar!  It makes your cookie blingy.  (Is that a word?  I better get  my dictionary out.)

In my pantry there are several containers of colored sanding sugar, a.k.a. sprinkles, a.k.a. colored sugar.  I went hog wild one day ordering stuff on-line.  So I have brown, blue, purple, gold…..you get the picture.  And while all those colors are pretty to look at, I’ve found that you really only need one color, white.

I used different icing colors on the cookies, but only used the white sanding sugar.  For the cookie above, I flooded the cookie with red royal icing, and then while it was wet, I spooned on the sanding sugar, removed the excess by turning the cookie over quickly so as not to mess up the flood, and then let it dry.  The sugar slightly dissolves into the icing, leaving it sparkly and beautiful.
